What is the meaning of Labor Day? Why was there a US holiday?

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the prosperity and well-being of our country.
It was hard times in the days of depression that hit the country in the 1880s. It led to widespread wage cuts and unemployment in the traditional pattern of the economic cycle. This was when the Knights of Labor came into being. It was their initiative that Labor Day turned out to be a civic event with parades and meetings.
It is a day intended to be set be aside to for all laborers (workers) to be able to stay away from the work place without fear of losing their jobs. Most employers pay their employees at their regular rate of pay as well. This is not happening as it should. Retailers, manufacturing plants, fast food chains, etc continue to ignore the importance of this one day a year of rest. On the flip side, hospitals, doctors, ministers, funeral directors, firemen and police officers and others who serve the public needs choose to take their turn no matter what day of the week or year it is. It is a matter of personal choice.

t depends, of course, on what you want to learn from the book.

For example, Peter Drucker is considered the father of modern management theory. He is easy to read and has lots of great insight. Here is a terrific starting place:

What is a "Googly"?

In cricket, a googly is a type of delivery bowled by a right-arm leg spin bowler. It is occasionally referred to as a Bosie (or Bosey) after its supposed inventor Bernard Bosanquet; in Australia it is commonly referred to as a wrong'un.

While a normal leg break spins from the leg to the off side, away from a right-handed batsman, a googly spins the other way, from off to leg, into a right-handed batsman. The bowler achieves this change of spin by rotating his wrist from the normal leg break delivery so that the ball rolls out the back of his hand with clockwise spin (from the bowler's point of view). A googly may also be achieved by bowling the ball as a conventional leg break, but spinning the ball further with the fingers just before it is released.

This change of wrist action can be seen by a skilled batsman and the change of spin allowed for when playing a shot at the ball. Less skilled batsmen, or ones who have lost their concentration, can be deceived completely, expecting the ball to move one direction off the pitch, only for it to move the other direction. If the batsman is expecting a leg break, he will play outside the line of the ball after it spins. This means the ball can either strike the pads for a potential lbw appeal, or may fly between the bat and the pads and hit the wicket.

The googly is a major weapon in the arsenal of a leg spin bowler, and can be one of the bowler's most effective wicket-taking balls. It is used infrequently, because its effectiveness comes mostly from its surprise value.

Left-arm unorthodox spinners, commonly known as "chinaman" bowlers, can bowl with the googly action using the left arm. This delivery is usually known as a chinaman googly and turns away from a right-handed batsman, like a leg break or left-arm orthodox spinner. The googly is similar in principle to the doosra, the ball from an off-spinner which turns the opposite way from his stock ball.

Wir leben, wie im Übrigen alle vorherigen Generationen, in modernen Zeiten. Was ist also näherliegend, als sich der modernsten aller Erfingunge, des Computers, für Lernzwecke anzueignen?

Wir sind also auf der Suche nach der passenden Software, sprich einem Programm, das uns begleiten soll, das nie die Geduld mit uns verliert und auch nicht böse ist, wenn es nach wochenlangem inaktiven Dasein, wieder einmal benutzt wird.

Hier kurz eine Lobeshymne auf die Software von "Rosetta Stone", die eine gute Methodik an den Tag legt. Das zu erlernende Vokabular wird einem sehr einprägsam mithilfe von Bildern und Spachausgabe beigebracht. Man hat das Gefühl als hätte man neuen, guten Freund, mit dem man sich nur noch nicht in seiner Muttersprache verständigen kann; und dieser zeigt (auf) Dinge und sagt ihre Bezeichnung, er sagt ein paar einfache Sätze, und man wiederholt einfach und erfasst mit der Zeit die Regeln und den Wortschatz der Spache intuitiv! So dringt man immer weiter in die Spache vor, die du lernst, und kannst schon bald Sätze bilden und beginnen, dich in der neuen Spache zu verständigen.

Tipps für einen Sprachkurs im Ausland

In Bezug auf Sprachaufenthalte im Ausland höre ich häufig Fragen wie:

"Ich möchte gerne ein bis zwei Wochen mein nicht ganz schlechtes Englisch besonders im Bereich „Business English“ verbessern. Der Kursort wäre idealerweise irgendwo in den englischsprachigen Ländern. Wer hat schon Erfahrungen mit solchen Kursen bzw. Anbietern? Ich finde zwar genug Anbieter im Netz, aber welcher taugt was?"

oder

"Ich beabsichtige meine mäßigen Englischkenntnisse an geeigneter Stelle im angelsächsischen Ausland zu „stählen“. Wer kann mir Erfahrungen diesbezüglich mitteilen?"

Hier einige Tipps und Ratschläge:

Fordere beim englischen Konsulat (British Council) die ARELS-Broschüre schicken. Da sind alle staatlich anerkannten Sprachschulen drin mit Infos zu Schülerzahlen, Kursangebot, Kosten, Alter der Schüler, Klassengrößen etc. Such Dir eine Schule aus und frag direkt nach ihren Unterlagen.

Am besten geeignet ist eine Schule mit:

hohem Mindestalter (sonst fühlst du dich im Kindergarten)
nicht am Meer (da triffst du viele Teenies, die vor allem rumhängen wollen
kleine Schule (hat ihre Lehrer besser im Griff, also die besseren Lehrer)
keine 'coole' Destination wie London, Cambridge, Oxford (da gibt es viele miese Schulen, die Profit aus ihrer Lage schlagen)

Von einer deutschen Organisation, die Dir ein Paket macht, würde ich Dir abraten. Sie schlagen happige Gebühren auf den Schulpreis, und vom Land oder von internationaler Stimmung an der Schule wirst Du nichts merken, da Du ganz unter Landsleuten sein wirst...
Du könntest auch überlegen, ob Du ein Sprachdiplom-Kurs machen willst - immer Gold wert.

Falsche Aussprache

Heute präsentiere ich einmal einen Link: 100 Most Often Mispronounced Words and Phrases in English. Die List von YourDictionary.com enthält einige Wörter, mit denen offenbar einige Engländer und Amerikaner Mühe haben.
Mir ist aufgefallen, dass bei den häufig falsch ausgesprochenen Begriffen vielfach nur ein Buchstaben ausgelassen wird. Vielleicht liegt das daran, dass viel weniger gelesen als gehört (TV) wird.
Einige "falsche Aussprachen" sind recht lustig:

Old-timer's disease statt Alzheimer's disease
Heineken remover statt Heimlich maneuver (or manoeuvre, Br.)
duck tape statt duct tape

Neues Wort: scorn

Heute beim Duchschauen von Tech-Memeorandum, einer Sammlung von relevante IT-News-Links und Reaktionen darauf, ist mir in einem Wired-Artikel folgende Überschrift aufgefallen:

Gates Opens CES With Scorn

Scorn? Das Wort hatte ich zwar schon mal gehört, die genaue Bedeutung fiel mir aber nicht mehr ein. Also:

scorn: der Hohn, die Verachtung
to scorn: verhöhnen, verachten, verschmähen.

Ein Redewendung:
to face a wall of hatred and scorn [fig.]: vor einer Mauer aus Hass und Verachtung stehen.

Wird wieder mal Zeit, mich meinen (un)geliebten Phrasal Verbs zu widmen. Heute einfach eine zufällige Zusammenstellung:

turn up: appear unexpectedly (plötzlich auftauchen)
I was surprised when John turned up at the party. We thought he was still ill.

look forward to (inseperable): eagerly anticipate (so in etwa: "etwas kaum erwarten können")
Pam is really looking forward to taking a vacation.

get off: make it possible for someone to avoid punishment
Everyone knew she was guilty, but her lawyer was clever and got him off.

Als Aufgabe möchte ich eine Geschichte schreiben, in der diese drei Phrasal Verbs vorkommen.

David was looking forward to return home after work. His friend had got a new videogame console and he wanted him to take a look at the new toy. He was leaving the office building as Matthew turned up. Matthew was David's best friend when both were teenagers. David owed him a lot, because Matthew got David off when David risked to be suspended from school. But that's another story...

Phrasal verbs: Freud' und Leid

Mit Phrasal Verbs hat sich wohl jeder Englischlernende schon herumschlagen müssen. Da es hunderte davon gibt, lassen sich nur entweder in ständiger Übung (Auswendiglernen) oder durch viel Praxis beherrschen. Ich habe gemerkt, dass ich sie häppchenweise lernen kann, indem ich versuche, sie in gewissen Alltagssituationen still für mich anzuwenden.

Also, zuerst mal eine Definition:

A phrasal verb is a verb plus a preposition or adverb which creates a meaning different from the original verb.

Beispiel:

I ran into my uncle at the theatre last weekend.
(run + info = meet)

Manche phrasal verbs sind intransitiv. Das Bedeutet, dass danach kein Objekt folgen kann. Hier ein Beispiel:

She suddenly showed up.

Transitive phrasal verbs hingegen verlangen ein Objekt, z.B.:

I can't make out your handwriting. (make + out = decipher)

Weiters unterscheiden wir transitive phrasal verbs in "trennbare" (1) und "nicht trennbare" (2):

(1) I talked my brother into letting me borrow the motorcycle.
(persuade)
(2) The police is looking into the murder. (investigate)

Manche transitive phrasal verbs erlauben es, das Objekt an beiden Stellen zu platzieren. Ausnahmen bilden Pronomen (me, it, ...). Sie müssen immer dazwischen genommen werden:

I looked the number up on the internet.
I looked up the number on the internet.
I looked it up on the internet.
~~I looked up it on the internet.~~

Gute Nacht!

Bevor ich diesen Wunsch ausspreche, hier ein paar Redewendungen, um dasselbe auf Englisch zu sagen:

Good night. / Have a good night.
Sleep tight.
Sweet dreams.
See you in the morning.
Sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite! (kann man zu Kindern sagen)

Interessant ist der Ursprung von "sleep tight". Die ersten Matratzen waren mit Stroh gefüllt und mit einem Riemen an das Bettgestell gezurrt. Ein fest (tight) Gurt war also eine Voraussetzung für einen guten Schlaf.

Ich hatte eine Idee: ein kleines Tagebuch, mit dem ich festhalte, was und wie ich gerade tue, um meine Englischkenntnisse zu verbessern. Vielleicht ist die eine oder andere Idee auch für andere interessant. Warum sollte ich meine Idee also nicht als Blog verwirklichen?

Übrigens: Es ist nie falsch, ein paar Synonyme parat zu haben. Zum Beispiel für "beginnen" - "to start":

start out
set about
set out
commence

Das Gegenteil von "synonym" auf Englisch lautet übrigens "antonym".
